On Tuesday evening, Afrobeats vocalist Oyinkansola Sarah Aderibigbe, better known by her stage name Ayra Starr, made her American television debut on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon as the host.

The 22-year-old captivated the audience with a dynamic performance of songs from her second album, “The Year I Turned 21.”

Her performance started with the R&B-inspired “Last Heartbreak Song” featuring Giveon, and reached its peak with the Afrobeats hit “Woman Commando” featuring Anitta and Coco Jones.

Ms. Starr’s captivating dance moves further enhanced the electrifying performance.

She has now joined the esteemed ranks of Nigerian artists such as Burna Boy, Wizkid, Davido, Rema, Fireboy, and Asake, who have graced the iconic TV show with their performances.

Ayra Starr, who recently released her album titled “The Year I Turned 21,” gained widespread recognition after the release of her hit single “Bloody Samaritan” in 2021.

In the same year, she launched her debut studio album, “19 and Dangerous,” which featured additional chart-topping songs such as “Away,” “Rush,” and “Bloody Samaritan,” which was later remixed in collaboration with American singer Kelly Rowland.

Starr has achieved remarkable success and recognition in the music industry, establishing herself as one of the most rapidly rising artists on the African continent. Notably, she was nominated for this year’s prestigious Grammy Awards among other prominent Nigerian music stars.

Her song “Rush” garnered her a Grammy nomination in the category of Best African Music Performance, making her the youngest Nigerian female artist to receive such an honor in that category. Regrettably, she did not secure the award, which was bestowed upon the South African singer Tyla.
