Recently, the Aviation University welcomed its first group of 90 students, marking a significant milestone in its history.

The African Aviation and Aerospace University (AAAU) has enrolled 90 pioneer undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Currently, the institution has 30 pioneer undergraduate students and 60 pioneer postgraduate students studying various disciplines in aviation and environmental science.

The inaugural matriculation occurred approximately ten months after the commencement of academic activities at the institution.

During the ceremony held in Abuja on Wednesday, July 24, Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, reassured the students that they would have employment opportunities after completing their studies.

He emphasized the high demand for skills in the aviation sector in Nigeria and highlighted the continuous growth and need for expertise in the industry.

Keyamo described the institution as a symbol of excellence and potential, not only for Nigeria and Africa but also for the global aviation industry. Today marks the commencement of a journey that will significantly influence the future of aviation and aerospace in our country and beyond.

The Minister emphasized the importance of a comprehensive long-term manpower development plan to address the critical human resource gaps within the aviation sector.

“The aviation and aerospace industries continue to experience a growing need for skilled professionals, and I firmly believe that the faculty and students of AAAU will emerge as global leaders in research and development, driving substantial progress within the field.

Rest assured that upon graduation, employment opportunities in the aviation sector will be readily available to all of you due to the increasing demand for skilled individuals.”

Regarding the significance of the specialized institution, Keyamo stated that the curriculum, meticulously crafted in collaboration with international aviation education experts from renowned specialized aviation institutions, seamlessly integrates theoretical knowledge with practical experience. Tailored to address local specificities, it ensures that graduates are well-equipped to navigate the challenges of the aviation industry and beyond. He urged students to establish high standards and uphold ethical conduct.

“To our incoming students, you are commencing a journey that will not only influence your own future but also the future of aviation and aerospace. You are the trailblazers of this esteemed institution, and with that honor comes the duty to establish high benchmarks and uphold ethical values to guide those who will come after you.

"You are all encouraged to graduate with distinction in both character and academics. Seize the opportunities presented to you, strive for excellence, and always remember that you represent not only students of AAAU but also the future of Nigeria's aviation and aerospace sector. Your time here will shape the trajectory of the aviation field, and I have full confidence that you will bring honor to us."

Mr. Keyamo also mentioned that the appointment of a new Vice Chancellor is imminent, as the relevant documentation is currently under review by President Bola Tinubu.

“I am pleased to also state here that a new Vice-Chancellor will be announced soon, following the directive of Mr. President. You should rest assured that this appointment shall mark a significant step in consolidating your achievements thus far.”

The Minister commenced the construction of the university’s infrastructure at its designated permanent location.

The site is planned to accommodate the faculty of aviation management building, the Postgraduate school building, a 250-person capacity auditorium, a 350-person capacity auditorium, a research center, a synoptic laboratory for meteorology, a multipurpose laboratory, initial fencing spanning 2 kilometers, and two ceremonial gatehouses.

During the groundbreaking ceremony, the Minister expressed confidence in the project’s timely completion within 48 weeks. Additionally, the university is considering potential partnerships with the private sector to develop various facilities, including hostels, a clinic, a conference center, and a hotel due to its proximity to the airport.

Keyamo explained that the grant was obtained through the approval of a start-up fund for capital projects by President Bola Tinubu via TETFund. The consistent backing from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has played a crucial role in realizing this vision. Therefore, we are gathered here today with the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu, who sanctioned a start-up grant for AAAU to supplement the budget allocation allocated for the university's progress in the 2024 budget.

The minister cautioned against poor quality work as the project construction begins.

“As we move into the construction phase, I remain confident that the President will continue to provide unwavering support to AAAU, ensuring that we achieve our objectives and deliver results that all stakeholders can be proud of.

However, there will be no tolerance for shoddy or poorly executed work on site. Any contractor found cutting corners will have their contract terminated and may face legal consequences.
