The School of Hard Knocks Talents, Nigeria, has entered into a partnership with an Australia-based SHEMAPS in order to address the dwindling standard of science education in the country.

In a bid to revitalise science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education in Nigeria, the School of Hard Knocks Talents (SOHK) Nigeria has partnered with the Australia-based SHEMAPS, a leading drone and geospatial firm.

The Chief Executive Officer of SOHK Talents Nigeria, Dr. Jerry Akubo, made the disclosure.

“The dwindling standard of science education in the country poses a significant threat to the growth of the sector. This partnership with SHEMAPS is a game-changer, as it will help us boost STEM education and make it more inclusive for students,” he said. Akubo, an expert in emerging technologies and remote sensing, explained that the collaboration among SOHK Talents, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC), and the Secondary Education Board (SEB), has already seen 450 students in 15 government schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), benefiting from the initiative.

“The foundational drone education programme, classroom drone essentials, has been developed by professionals and drone experts to help more teachers engage a greater diversity of students and make STEM subjects more appealing,” he added.

A co-founder of SHEMAPS, Mr. Paul Mead, expressed his organisation’s enthusiasm for the partnership.

“SHEMAPS is a social enterprise headquartered in Australia, and we are thrilled to be equipping young girls and boys with the STEM tools they need to succeed. This diverse role model is what the partnership is all about.”

Nigeria is said to be the 16th country to benefit from this innovative collaboration.
