First position, Sowemimo Efunjola Olumayowa, gets prize |
The Lagos State University (LASU) has refused to stay off the news chat just as it has consistently continued to compel mention in prime times and pages of electronic and print media respectively locally and globally.
This best state university in Nigeria, the best In West
Africa, the most digitally inclined higher institution in Nigeria; and now
authoritatively one of the top-rated among well over 400,000 varsities in the
world, has garnered another four-fold top feathers in its intellectual flight.
Another testimony to this is that four LASU students made
the list of the five tops in an essay competition for undergraduate students of
all tertiary institutions in Lagos State organised by the Lagos State
Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) to commemorate the Y2024 World
Environmental Day.
The essay competition with the theme “Land Restoration,
Desertification and Drought Resilience” had a total of 174 students debate
using the Lagos State experience while proferring innovative solutions to the
problems identified.
We gathered that LASU had a total of seventy-three (73)
entries at the competition (which made the highest number of entries) nine of
which scaled the rigorous screening to the final top 20 list.
Four of the students made the top five (in straight first to
the fourth positions) at the event held on Thursday, 20th June 2024
at the LASEPA Headquarter, Alausa, Ikeja.

Acting Dean of Students Affairs Division, Dr Abiodun
Fatai-Abatan led the students to the grand finale of the competition while the
Director, Directorate of Special Interventions, Prof. Oseni Afisi, coordinated
LASU’s participation in the event.
The Vice C”ancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello
congratulates the students on their participation and victory. She urges them
to keep the flag of the university flying while assuring them of the
university’s support for future competitions.
With this sustained soft surge in success, LASU has, today,
become the hard nut to crack and the envied model to emulate among its
contemporaries in the comity of Ivory Tower.
