MTN has confirmed that it will continue offering its SuperFlex packages beyond 29 February 2024.
South Africa’s second-largest mobile network operator first
announced MTN SuperFlex in September.
MTN SuperFlex is an online, SIM-only, month-to-month tariff
plan that offers unlimited voice and SMS messages with a large data bundle.
Packages start at 10GB for R299 per month
However, the terms and conditions state that SuperFlex is a
promotion that will only be available until 29 February 2024.
It Is not unusual for operators to launch new products like
this as a promotion.
Operators are required to file any adjustments to their
permanent tariffs with the industry regulator, Icasa.
Launching a new service as a promotion allows operators to
quickly cancel or amend it if it doesn’t work.
Or, in the case of uncapped plans like SuperFlex, pull it
off the market if there is a large amount of abuse that MTN’s systems fail to
detect and block.
For example, MTN makes clear that SuperFlex is intended for
individual consumers. It is not designed for a business to run their office
line on or send out masses of SMS notifications.
Fortunately, the risks that could have led to SuperFlex
being scrapped do not appear to have materialised.
“Due to the positive response from the market, MTN will be
extending the offer beyond February 2024,” MTN SA chief sustainability and
corporate affairs officer Jacqui O’Sullivan told MyBroadband.
“The extension will include a lot more enhancements,
improvements, new and exciting features. Customers should expect more details
on this offer in the next coming weeks.”
MTN already added the ability to use an existing number with
SuperFlex a month after launching the product.
Functionality MTN said was still in the works at the time
includes support for eSIMs.
