The council noted in a statement on Friday that the varsity
had consistently violated its approved quotas, adding that findings by the
Nigerian Law School revealed that the varsity founded by the Labour Party’s
presidential running mate, Datti Baba-Ahmed, was carrying over 347 backlogged
law graduates awaiting admission.
A first-year student, Hauwa (surname withheld), said she had
just started her law education in the varsity and did not want any form of
disruption due to compliance issues.
“The law students in the university are really many. In my
class alone, we are almost 100 and some people, I learnt, may join us during
our second year for direct entry.
“My parents are worried. They have asked if the ban affects
my set but I don’t even know anymore because the school is yet to make a
statement on it,” he said.
In a WhatsApp screenshot, Hauwa sent, several of her
classmates on their online platform, expressed their confusion and sadness over
the development.
One Joseph (surname withheld) said he got a call from his
father on Saturday morning when the news broke, asking if he would have to
transfer to another school.
Another student, who only identified himself as Tunji, said
he spent over three years searching for admission from several universities
before he got into Baze.
He said, “Baze should fix this. This thing is just
suspicious. They should not bring their politics into our school. The law
faculty was not complaining.”
Trustees’ meeting
Meanwhile, a source in the office of the Registrar of the
University stated that the university’s Board of Trustees and Senate were set
to meet this week on the matter.
The source said, “Our Pro-Chancellor is aware and he has
given instructions. The BoT and Senate are also going to meet on the matter
this week. It will be resolved. No student should be afraid to choose Baze.”
‘Ban politically-motivated’
The Spokesman for Obi-Datti Campaign Organisation, Yunusa
Tanko, on Saturday faulted the sanction on Baze University, alleging that it
was an orchestrated attack on the owner, Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.
