The Delhi Police has sought information from Twitter about the account that first tweeted about the 'Bulli Bai' app and asked it to remove the offensive content. It has also sought information from software development platform GitHub about the 'Bulli Bai' app developer, Delhi Police sources said.

The controversy sparked barely six months after the 'sulli deals' controversy as photos of hundreds of Muslim women were uploaded on an app called 'Bulli Bai'. The cybercriminals would collect photos of Muslim women from their social media accounts and encourage people to participate in their "auction".

Earlier, the Cyber Crime Police Station of Hyderabad Police and the Mumbai cybercrime branch took cognisance of the online harassment of Muslim women on the 'Bulli Bai' app.

Information and Technology Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw earlier said the perpetrator's account had been blocked by GitHub and police and Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT) were investigating the matter.

"GitHub confirmed blocking the user this morning itself. CERT and Police authorities are coordinating further action," he tweeted on Sunday.

Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi supported the women on Twitter.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said, "The humiliation and communal hatred towards women will stop only when we all stand against it in one voice. The year has changed - now we have to speak up!"
