Nigeria on Monday reported 420 new coronavirus cases in 12 states and the Federal Capital Territory, with eight COVID-19 related deaths in the past 24 hours.

The new numbers in the Western African country brought the overall caseload to 248,732 infections and 3,085 related deaths as the health authorities urged the public to strictly adhere to prevention measures.

While the number of COVID-19 infections has been relatively low in Nigeria compared with elsewhere, the West African nation is emerging from its deadliest wave yet.

Monday’s figure released by Nigeria Centre for Disease Control NCDC is lower than the 537 infections recorded on Sunday.

According to the NCDC figures, Lagos State, which remains the country’s epicentre of the infection, led the new infections  with 103 cases. It was followed by the Kwara with 90 cases and Akwa-Ibom with 49 infections.

Others as follows FCT-39, Kano-33, Rivers-31, Cross River-17, Ogun-17, Kaduna-15, Edo-11, Niger-9, Oyo-5 and Abia-1.

While Delta, Ekiti, Ogun, Ondo, Osun, Plateau, and Sokoto States reported zero cases on Monday.

With the latest figure, the number of active COVID-19 cases in Nigeria stood at 26,168.  This shows a decrease of 70 when compared with the 26,238 active cases previously.

Meanwhile, almost 220,000 people infected by COVID-19 in Nigeria have recovered after treatment. The figure indicates the level of success the country's health professionals have recorded in containing the virus.

According to NCDC data, a total of 219,479 have recovered after treatment since the start of the pandemic, including 482  recoveries reported on Monday.

Nigeria has conducted 3,933,209 tests so far, less than two per cent of the two hundred million inhabitants of Africa's most populous nation.
