Health officials in Nigeria registered 1,368 new COVID-19 cases on Monday in 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory, as positive infections continue to surge daily amid the highly contagious Omicron variant.

Monday's case count is up from the 404 infections reported on Sunday.

As of December 20, 2021, the total number of lab confirmed COVID-19 cases in Nigeria amounted to 225,255.

The death toll in the nation has remained at 2,985 as no new deaths were reported in last 24 hours.

Nigeria also reported 123 recoveries in 24 hours on Monday, increasing the total number of COVID-19 recoveries in the nation to 211,660.

The recoveries today include 11 discharged cases reported in Anambra state on 19th December 2021. And 13 discharged cases reported in FCT on 20th December 2021.

Active cases in Nigeria increased by 1,227 — from 9,383 it was the previous day to 10,610.

According to the Nigeria Center for Disease Control NCDC, 3,751,696 samples have been tested for COVID-19 since last year’s February. Of these, 65,293 samples were tested within the past one week.

The five states which registered the most number of cases on Monday are, Lagos, most affected by COVID-19 in Nigeria reported 844 cases, FCT, second most affected in Nigeria reported 209 cases, followed by Oyo with 58 cases, Abia had 51 cases and Ondo with 39 cases.

Thirty of the new cases were found in Ogun state, twenty-six in Kaduna, twenty in Delta, seventeen in Akwa Ibom, fifteen in Osun and twelve in Ekiti.

Also Anambra and Zamfara had seven cases each on Monday, Cross River, Kano, Kwara and Rivers had six cases each, Bauchi had five, Gombe had three and Plateau reported one case.

While zero cases reported from Sokoto State.

NCDC stated that today’s report includes seven confirmed cases reported in Anambra state on the 19th December 2021.

Twenty-six confirmed cases reported in Kaduna state on the 19th (10) & 20th (16) December 2021.

The health department continues to recommend disease prevention protocol; i.e., wearing masks, social distancing, hand washing, and disinfecting surfaces to prevent the spread of the virus.
