Salawa Abeni Goes On Stage With
Son, Big Sheff
Queen
Salawa Abeni is an artiste that virtually made ‘Waka’ style of music very
popular and took it beyond bounds.
Her style
was of music was first made known to many by Batile Alake, but the influence of
Salawa on the Islamic-influenced traditional Yoruba style of music cannot be
rubbished. This made the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi to crown Salawa as
the ‘Queen of Waka Music’ in 1992.
Salawa began
her professional music career with her debut album, ‘Late General Murtala Ramat
Mohammed’ in 1976 under Leader Records and since then, she has remained one of
the forces to be reckoned with in her line of profession.
In 1986, the
53-year-old musician left Leader Records after her relationship with the label's
owner, Lateef Adepoju ended. She then married Fuji music star, Kollington
Ayinla and joined his record label instead, staying with him until 1994.
While
their affair lasted, the couple had children and one of them is a rapper, who
goes by the stage name, Big Sheff.
Recently,
Salawa did a remix of one of her hit singles, ‘Gentle Lady’ and featured her
son, who rapped on it.
They both
performed Penultimate week the song at the 2015 Felebration, which received
wide applauses from guests at the event. The mother and son have even gone
further to drop video of the song and it is currently enjoying massive
airplays.
