The Lagos State
House of Assembly last week Thursday called on Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode to
dissolve the membership of the Judicial Service Commission following the
expiration of their five-year tenure.
This followed a motion moved by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon. Sanai
Agunbiade (APC- Ikorodu 1) and seconded by Abiodun Tobun (APC-Epe 1) during
plenary.
Agunbiade in the
motion titled: "The call for the dissolution of the Lagos State Judicial
Service Commission" premised the call on the expiration of the stipulated
five year tenure of the membership of the commission.
"We further
know that Lagos State Judicial Service Commission sees to the appointment,
promotion, discipline and control, recommendation for National Judicial Council
for the appointment of the Chief Judge and judges of the High Courts
"Observe that
the current membership of the Lagos State Judicial Service Commission of
Thursday Feb. 25, 2010 established the current membership of the commission and
was confirmed by Lagos State House of Assembly.
"We further
observed that section 197 (1) C of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal
Republic of Nigeria (as amended) approved the five year tenure of the
commission from the date of appointment.
"Observe that the Chairman and the members are still in position in spite of the fact that their tenure was expected to expire in February 2015.

After a voice vote
conducted by the Speaker, Rt. (Hon.) Mudashiru Obasa, which favoured adoption
of the motion, Obasa said:
"This House
resolves to call on His Excellency, the Governor of Lagos State, Mr Akinwunmi
Ambode to dissolve the current memberships of the Lagos State Judicial Service
Commission to the effect of the expiration of their five year tenure."
Meanwhile, the
House constituted an ad hoc committee to review the Assembly Code of Ethics to
meet with the current reality. This followed a motion moved by the Chief Whip
of the House, Hon. Rotimi Abiru
(APC-Shomolu 2) and Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (APC-Agege 2).
The Speaker, Rt.
(Hon.) Mudashiru Obasa said: "This House resolves to constitute an
ad hoc committee to review the 2001 Code of Ethics with the view to
make necessary recommendations" After a voice vote and adoption, the Speaker
listed the committee members to be Hon. Rotimi Abiru (APC-Shomolu 2), Hon.
Omotayo Oduntan (APC-Alimosho 2), and Hon. Yinka Ogundimu (APC-Agege-2).
Others are: Hon.
Segun Olulade (APC-Epe 2), Hon. Mosunmola Sangodara-Rotimi (PDP-Surulere 2) and Hon. Hakeem Bello
(PDP-Amunwo-Odofin).
