Last Friday, top gospel singer in Nigeria, Kefee Obareki died after being in coma for days in a US hospital. Her demise came as a shock to many Nigerians, who thought the lady would come back to life. She was a darling to many music buffs as a talented female gospel artiste.
Her ‘Branama’
hit single back then did not only launch her into the gospel music scene, but
also put her name on the map of the Nigerian entertainment industry. Years
later, she shook the streets of Nigeria with a duet with Timaya, a dancehall
artiste, with the multi award-winning ‘Kokoroko’.
The song also
pushed Timaya’s music career as some were almost getting tired of his ‘enemies’
and ‘olofofo’ anthem.
Kefee finally
lost her battle for survival after days in coma, when she was rushed to the
hospital as she reportedly collapsed on a plane to the United States. Doctors
battled to bring her back to life in a stable manner, but afterwards she
reportedly came out of coma and went back only to succumb to nature and went to
the world beyond.
Though several
reports claimed Kefee died with a six-month pregnancy, her management in the
United Kingdom released a statement debunking such reports.
According to the
release made available to First Weekly, “Kefee was neither six
months pregnant nor had pre-eclampsia (a situation associated with pregnancy
induced hypertension).”
Meanwhile, some
of the colleagues of the deceased in the entertainment industry have expressed
shock at the singer’s death. They lamented that her talent would be missed in
the entertainment industry in Nigeria.
“She was a
friend, a sister, a colleague and a strong woman. Working with you on that
‘Kokoroko’ song was a blessing. We will miss you much dear. RIP ‘Branama’ queen
Kefee,” Timaya said, while Daddy Showkey, who hails from the same state as the
deceased, simply said, “Kefee, may your soul rest in peace.”
On the part of
Ini Edo, she said, “Rest in the bosom of the Lord. I wasn’t privileged to know
much about you, but the world cannot be wrong about you being a sweetheart. I
can remember how much you wanted me at the official opening of your restaurant.
I particularly was a fan of your song, ‘Kokoroko’. Dunno why, we can’t question
God, but I believe He has provided a better resting place for you in his bosom.
RIP.”
Waje, Kaffy and
Rita Dominic respectively said, “Sleep well dear,” “RIP Kefee,” and “this is
just sad. RIP Kefee, only God knows best.”
