Award winning police officer, Abba
Kyari,is the Officer in charge of Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos
state, a position he has held for almost two years with several achievements in
his kitty.
Considering what
Anti Robbery Squad is doing in Lagos state and other South West states in
terms of combating crime in the last one year, one would agree that they have
done phenomenally well in discharging their duty.
One of the
prominent cases, Abba Kyari, has dealt with it this year, was the
kidnapping case of the mother of the present Minister of Finance, Dr.
Mrs. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala in Delta state, among other kidnappings. It was
on these bases that the Commissioner Of Police, CP Umar Manko, directed the O/C
SARS, SP Abba Kyari to go after the gang leader called Marvelous and his
cohorts.
Kyari, on his
detective strategy, expanded his tracking network that led to the arrest of the
gang leader, one Jide Ojo a.k.a Marvelous, Buhari Hamadola, Hassan Oseni,
Micheal Ojeabulu, Endurance Eke and Ibrahim Abubakar.
They were all
nabbed from Edo, Rivers, Delta and Anambra state respectively on April 2,2013.
Upon their
arrest,all the suspects made confessional statements to have participated in
the Kidnapping of the Finance Minister,Mrs Ngozi Okojo Iweala and several other
kidnapping cases including the most recent one, where they killed one victim,an
elderly woman,Mrs Regina Obi Dainty.
Another high
profile robbery incident the Lagos residents would not forget in a hurry was
the broad day light robbery at the Muritala Muhammed International
Airport, Ikeja, Lagos state.
This unfortunate
incident happened on the 13th of March,2013,where two police men and one of the
armed robber were killed with cash running into millions of local and foreign
currency was carted away.
SP Abba Kyari and his men through diligent analysis tracking, arrested three of
the robbers namely; Olanrewaju John a.k.a Pastor, Okunola Saheed and Saheed
Adekunle, who were arrested in Lagos and Ikire, Osun state, respectively.
On their arrest,
they confessed to the crime which led to their hideout in a thick forest in
Agoro area In Odogbolu Local Government area of Ogun state, where the following
arms and ammunitions were recovered; Five AK-47 rifles,54 AK-47 Magazines all
loaded with 30 rounds of live ammunitions. That
is not all, also recovered from them was 4 dynamites, two locally made pistol
with three cartridges concealed in an iron bus buried in the bush.
Two Toyota Sienna
Space Buses with Reg No BDG 918 AG and AAA 984 AJ used for the airport
operation. Six more gang members, Kazeem Aderibigbe, Ibrahim Abdulahi, Toba
Adeniyi, Felix Sunday, Esho, Chimobi, were subsequently arrested.
Some time in
September last year at a GT Bank, on Awolowo Road, Ikoyi, one Yahaya
Aminu Dutse, a staff of Dangote Group of Company and cousin to Aliko
Dangote, went to the bank to withdraw money from his ATM account.
Suddenly, about
four men emerged and kidnapped him and put him inside his kia Cerato car and
took him to an unknown destination. And sooner the kidnappers started demanding
for the sum of 150 dollars.
The O/C SARS,SP
Abba Kyari and SP Aisha Haruna, the DPO of Ikoyi Station, quickly swung into
action and deployed their operatives to Ajah. After several plots by the
kidnappers, one of they came with a Bajaj Motorcycle to collect the ransom from
the operatives who has disguised to be relative of the victims and was
arrested.
Thereafter, two
other gang members were tracked to Ajao Estate area by the SP Abba Kyari where
they were subsequently arrested,making the total of three. Two pistol and 17
cartridges recovered.
On August
1,2013,after many years of follow up and diligent investigation, Abba Kyari led
a team of detectives to Ibadan, Oyo state, where one Abiodun Egunjobi, better
known as Godododo, the leaders of the robber, terrorizing South West was
arrested.
Egunjobi was
nabbed in his mansion at Olowu area of Egbeda L G A in Ibadan Oyo state with
two Ak-47 rifles,ten Ak-47 magazines fully loaded and a police bullet proof
vest. Egunjobi and his group, was reportedly said to have killed well over
fifty policemen and several civilians. Shortly before his arrest, he was
said to have killed the owner of 04 Hotel in Ajah, Lagos along with his six
other occupants including two policemen and robbed several other places in
Lagos.
Abiodun was also
said to have led a bank robbery in Kwara,Osun, Ekiti,Ondo and Oyo states. The
Sars operatives has arrested over thirty of this gang members and had also
recovered large chunk of arms and ammunitions from them.
After their
arrest, the Ajah residents and its environs as well as Lagos state and
the whole South west states now have an euphoric sigh of release after
the capture of this deadly armed robbery bandits. On 24 of June, based on
a painstaking follow up, surveillance and tracking of a Ghana based Nigerian
armed robbers/kidnappers operating in full military uniforms armed with AK-47
rifles and who had earlier kidnapped the chairman, Ejigbo L G A in Lagos, Hon
Kehinde Bamgbetan.
Kyari, acting on a
GPS obtained from a car tracking data of a victim kidnapped in June 9,2013,led
a team of crack detectives to Edu Village, Agbara, Ogun state where the deadly
kidnappers were apprehended. During the search of the camp, four Ak-47
rifles,28 Ak-47 magazines fully loaded with thirty rounds of live ammunitions
were recovered.
Charms, Army
uniforms as well as their operational vehicles were recovered. A victim of the
kidnappers, an Indian nationale, one Mr. Vivex Changrani, who was earlier
kidnapped by the gang at Ikoyi area of Lagos was successfully rescued from
their camp without any injury.
On Kyari 's
further revelations, on 12 of June 2013,a radio message intercepted from Police
Control Room confirmed that a group of hoodlums struck and snatched a Honda
Odyssey Space Wagon at gun point along Abeokuta street, Ebute- Metta, Lagos and
subsequent attack on Policemen attached to Adeniji Adele Division at Idumagbo,
Lagos on June 14. The Sars swung into action and laid a siege at Eko
Bridge where they were nabbed. Five of the bandits were fatally wounded while
few escaped with bullet wounds. Two automatic pump action guns,f ifty
live cartridges, three AK-47 magazines, three locally made pistol and several
expensive phones from their operational vehicle, an Honda Odyssey car, which
they had earlier snatched for the purpose of the operation.
Abba's gallantry
performance continued to rise on monthly bases. On the 16th of June,
Kyari received an information that a deadly armed robber, Mustapha Owolabi,
aka, Gbebo, whose gang terrorizing Lagos and neighboring states, resides at
Alagbado area of Lagos. A team of crack sars operatives swung into action and
arrested the said Owolabi, who on interrogation confessed to series of armed
robbery operations within Lagos and Ogun states.
During the
operation, two AK-47 rifles, seven AK-47 magazines fully loaded, one hundred
and eighteen rounds of live AK-47 rifle ammunition, three singles barrel
pistols and double barrel pistols were recovered from the gang.
On a tip off, SP
Abba Kyari, arrested a human parts dealers, identified as Jamiu Adeleke. The 40
year old man was nabbed by sars operatives in Owode town,Ogun state with a
human hand that he was about selling for twenty one thousand naira. Jamiu
confessed that one Sanni Kazeem sold the human hand for him at the rate of
N6000.
When Sanni was
arrested he confessed that he had supplied two human heads to a dealer, named
as Akiwowo Fatai,who was equally arrested. Akiwowo confessed receiving
the two human heads and also four heads from another supplier, identified as
Agboola Kolawole.
The O/C SARS has
also doubled efforts by sending more detectives to these environs to arrest the
remaining suspects at large. On April this year,Abba,on a tip off heard that
some gang of deadly armed robbers were at Orisunbare street in Ayobo area of
Lagos, preparing for an operation. A team of detectives led by O/C SARS, Kyari
swung into action where one Kazeem Adebola was arrested. After the invasion of
the SARS,AK-47 rifles, seventeen magazines loaded with rounds each concealed in
one Honda Civic Saloon car.
On 28th
September,2012,information rife that about a deadly armed robbery gang based at
IIemba Hausa Ajagbandi, was received by SP Abba Kyari, the O/C SARS Lagos,
immediately, Kyari, led a team to the area and after some grueling hours,
arrested the following suspects, Uche okeagbu, Chinonso Nwuagwu, Emmanuel and
shockingly recovered the following arms,9 AK-47, two General Purpose Machine
Guns(GPMG),one rocket propelled grenade launcher, two hundred and twenty five
AK-47 magazines and 260 GPMG live ammunition and five dynamites with a detonator.
In addition, two
modified Volks Wagen buses with registration numbers LSD 467 AR and AGL 506 KB
with fake chasis that served as arms converyors and armories for the robbers
were
recovered.
However, on the 20th january,2013,in a follow up to the tracking of th armed
robbers that struck in Elemero area of Lagos, four police men were
killed. Information was later received that six of the armed robbers have
gathered at a beer parlour at Oyewole street Agege in preparations for a robbery
operation, detectives from Sars led by Abba Kyari led the team and laid a
seige.
At end of the gun
duel, the bandits identified as Sodiq, Tohib Adio and Yusuf Lekan were fatally
wounded. Two AK-47 rifles, five AK47 rifle magazines all loaded and one local made
pistol with eighteen live cartridges were recovered.
All these and many
more achievements, the Borno state born military brass has achieved in his few
years in the helms of affair of Special Anti Robbery Squad, Ikeja, Lagos State
Police Command.
The cool and
collected Kyari had his tertiary education at the University of Maiduguri,
Borno State. The Geography graduate served several capacities in the
Nigerian Police Force before his present position as Officer in Charge Special
Anti Robbery squad.
Aside the
Gallantry and Service Excellence Award by Governor Of Lagos state of
2011/2012,he was few months ago honored Inspector. General Of Police
Commendation Award for Courage of 2013 and2012 respectively.
