President Goodluck Jonathan |
Members of the
Nigerian House of Representatives during Thursday plenary session took ample
time to deliberate on the alleged scandal on the $1.3 billion sale of oil block
to SHELL/Agip and resolved to investigate the matter.
The resolution
came on the heel of media report that some government functionaries in the
President Goodluck Jonathan were involved in round tripping of the proceeds from
the transaction.
The committee is
to conduct the investigative public hearing on the questionable sale of OPL 245
and report back to the House within three weeks.
In his lead
debate, Hon Robinson Uwak representing Oron Federal Constituency in Akwa Ibom
expressed concern over the national embarrassment the transaction has caused
the country.
He said "The
transaction between Shell and the Federal Government is not really the issue
but the subsequent transfer of the $1.3 billion into Malibu Oil and Gas company
that I implore this House to investigate the matter and save the country the
embarrassment.”
To address the
issue, Uwak urged the House to investigate the role played by Federal
Government in the "alleged round-tripping in the sale of OPL 245 oil bloc
to and the immediate transfer of the fund to Malibu Oil and Gas Ltd.
“The tripartite
arrangement is suspicious because the purported $1.092 billion that was
immediately transferred into the account of Malibu Oil and Gas Ltd did not follow
due process and the pattern of distribution."
He added that
“there are substantial grounds for the investigation of this matter because of
the negative publicity which this matter has generated within Nigeria and abroad
with damning consequences for our national image and credibility made it necessary
to bring the matter before this Honourable House.”
The debate was put
to a voice vote and it was unanimously adopted that an adhoc committee be
constituted to investigate the Federal Government on its alleged role in the
sale of OPL 245 to HELL/Agip
