Nigerian musician Abdulazeez Fashola, popularly known as Naira Marley, has urged the public to hold him personally accountable for his actions rather than associating his lifestyle with Islam.

In a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, the controversial artist clarified that while Islam is a flawless faith, its followers—like all humans—are imperfect.

“Islam is perfect, Muslims are not. If I make a mistake, blame me, but not my religion.” he wrote.

The statement ignited a fiery debate online, with netizens divided in their reactions.

One user supported his stance, commenting, “This is why Muslims are encouraged to live by the teachings of Islam. We must always strive to be good ambassadors of our faith.” Another agreed, “Well said! Islam, like any faith, is pure. It’s the people who fall short. Judge individuals, not religion.”

However, critics pushed back. One remarked sarcastically, “Oh no, you’re the perfect representation of your religion—flaws and all.” Another added humorously, “By the way, if you can read actual Arabic (which I can), I’ll pick a song from your playlist and endure it all day.”

A reflective user concluded, “No religion is perfect, just as no human is. Faith is meant to guide, not to claim superiority. What truly matters is how we live, treat others, and strive for truth.”
