The third day of the MTN CHAMPS Season 3 Classics wrapped up on Saturday, March 15, at Benin City’s Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium, showcasing Nigeria’s next generation of athletic talent. The event, a key platform for grassroots sports development, attracted over 2,000 young athletes competing in cadet, youth, and junior categories.

Delta State’s David Efetobore stole the spotlight with a double victory, securing gold in both the senior boys’ 100m and 200m events. His standout performance in the 200m, clocking 21.53 seconds, highlighted his potential as a rising star. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Grace Oyibu from Onicha-Ugbo Mixed Secondary School dominated the junior girls’ 200m, finishing in 24.57 seconds.

The competition also unveiled promising young talents like 12-year-old Joel Oghele, who displayed impressive poise in the youth boys’ 200m against older competitors. Bayelsa State also made a strong impression, particularly in the junior girls’ events, with multiple podium finishes.

Bambo Akani, founder of Making of Champions (MoC), praised the event’s expansion, stating, We began Season 1 here with about 1,000 athletes—now that number has doubled. He also highlighted the debut of athletes from the Team MTN MoC Academy, who, after nine months of rigorous training in Lagos, claimed several medals.

Looking forward, Akani revealed that performances are being evaluated to select Most Valuable Performers (MVPs) for the Season 3 Grand Finale in Uyo. “The juniors and youths turned out in strong numbers, with nearly 1,000 youth athletes competing,” he added.

The MTN CHAMPS Season 3 journey continues with the Lagos leg, featuring the Continental Relays from April 9–12 at YabaTech and UNILAG, before culminating in the Grand Finale from April 30 to May 3 at Uyo’s Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.

Aligned with MTN’s commitment to community empowerment, the initiative provides young Nigerian athletes with a vital pathway to professional sports through competition, mentorship, and academy opportunities.
